The severity of an event is related to the disruptions (things like strikes, boycotts, regulatory reviews and so on) it causes. In this case, MSA uses samples from its historical database, chosen for their similarity to the current issue, to estimate how severe prior disruptions increase the possibility of more severe events going forward.
